A step-by-step guide to mounting and wiring the Kilter Wall Light in Solid Brass, including key checks for safe installation and a common mistake to avoid.

Quick answer

Mount the Kilter Wall Light in Solid Brass by connecting the supply wires to the fixture's terminals, securing the bracket to a junction box, and attaching the fixture. Always turn off power at the breaker before starting.

Before you begin: check your junction box

The Kilter Wall Light requires a standard round or rectangular junction box that is securely fastened to a wall stud or blocking. Because the solid brass finish adds weight compared to painted versions, confirm the box can support the fixture's full mass. If your box is old or loose, reinforce it with a retrofit brace before mounting the bracket.

Working with the solid brass enamel finish

The Solid Brass enamel coating is durable but can scratch if handled with metal tools. Use a soft cloth or rubber pad when gripping the fixture, and avoid overtightening the screws on the bracket. A small torque is enough to hold the fixture flush without damaging the finish.

Installation steps

  1. Turn off power and remove the old fixture: Switch off the circuit breaker for the room. Remove any existing wall light and disconnect the wires. Use a voltage tester to confirm no live current is present. Never rely on the wall switch alone; always trip the breaker.
  2. Attach the mounting bracket: Secure the provided bracket to the junction box using the included screws. Ensure it is level and tight. The bracket must align with the fixture's keyhole slots. A crooked bracket will make the final fixture tilt – use a spirit level.
  3. Connect the wiring: Match the supply wires to the fixture wires: black (or brown) to live, white (or blue) to neutral, and green/bare copper to ground. Use wire nuts and wrap with electrical tape. Tuck the wires neatly into the junction box. Leave enough slack so the wires are not pinched when you push the fixture against the wall.
  4. Mount the fixture and secure the set screws: Align the Kilter Wall Light's keyhole slots over the bracket screws. Push the fixture flush against the wall and tighten the set screws evenly until snug. Do not overtighten. Overtightening can crack the enamel or strip the screw threads.
  5. Install the bulb and test: Screw in a compatible S14d bulb (not included). Restore power at the breaker and turn on the switch. If the light does not illuminate, recheck the wiring connections before contacting a licensed electrician. Flickering or no light usually indicates a loose wire nut or wrong polarity.
