Learn the most common causes of table lamp flickering—loose bulbs, faulty sockets, or incompatible dimmers—and follow a simple diagnosis to fix it.

Quick answer

A flickering table lamp usually means a loose bulb, a worn socket, or an incompatible dimmer. Try tightening the bulb first—if that doesn't work, check the socket tab and then test a different bulb before considering a socket replacement.

Why your lamp flickers matters for the fix

Flickering is rarely a sign that the lamp is broken. Most causes are simple and inexpensive to fix yourself. The key is to isolate the problem step by step so you don't replace parts you don't need.

If your table lamp flickers only with LED bulbs, the issue could be a dimmer not rated for LEDs. If it flickers with any bulb, the problem is likely in the lamp's socket or wiring.

4-step flicker diagnosis

  • 1. Tighten the bulb: Turn off and unplug the lamp. Screw the bulb in firmly—don't overtighten. If the bulb is loose, the connection breaks intermittently and causes flicker. If flickering stops, you're done.
  • 2. Check the socket tab: With the lamp unplugged, look inside the socket. You'll see a small metal tab at the bottom. If it's flattened, gently pry it up slightly with a non-conductive tool (like a plastic toothpick) so it makes better contact with the bulb's base. Test the lamp. If it still flickers, move to step 3.
  • 3. Swap the bulb: Replace the current bulb with a known working bulb of the same type and wattage. If the flicker goes away, the original bulb is defective or incompatible. If the flicker remains, the socket or lamp wiring is likely faulty.
  • 4. Inspect and decide on socket repair: Unplug the lamp and examine the socket for cracks, burns, or corrosion. If you see damage, replace the socket (a $5–10 part) or the whole lamp. If the socket looks clean but the lamp still flickers, the internal wiring may be loose—this is when to call an electrician or replace the lamp. Stop here if you're not comfortable with wiring repairs. A new lamp is often safer and more cost-effective.
